The name ‘Rokuon-ji’ means ‘Temple of the deer garden’ probably doesn’t sound familiar to you. It is much better known by its informal name ‘Kinkaku-ji‘ or ‘Temple of the Golden Pavilion’. This shiny, beautiful structure is a Buddhist temple of the Zen type that was founded in 1397. It was the resting villa of the third shogun, Ashikaga Yoshimitsu, who reigned during the Muromachi Period.
